Embarking on the Honest Hearts expansion in Fallout: New Vegas begins with the Happy Trails Expedition quest. This introductory mission serves as your gateway to the scenic yet dangerous Zion Canyon. Preparing properly before stepping through the Northern Passage ensures a smooth transition into this iconic story arc.

Locating the Northern Passage and Starting the Quest

To initiate the quest, select Happy Trails Expedition in your Pip-Boy log after installing the add-on. Travel to the far northern edge of the Mojave map to locate the cave known as the Northern Passage. Inside, you will encounter Jed Masterson leading the Happy Trails Caravan.

Before speaking to Jed, make sure to resolve any active follower status, as companions cannot accompany you to Zion. Reviewing your inventory ahead of time prevents last-minute headaches at the cave entrance.

Managing Weight Limits and Gear Restrictions

Jed enforces a strict carry weight restriction of 75 pounds for anyone joining the expedition. However, players who pass a Survival 50 skill check can increase this limit to 100 pounds. It is wise to store excess heavy gear in a safe player home rather than leaving it at the cave entrance.

Focus on bringing high-efficiency weapons and versatile armor while leaving heavy power suits behind. You will find plenty of native weapons, unique gear, and ammunition once you enter Zion Canyon.

Surviving the Initial Ambush in Zion

Once you speak to Jed and confirm you are ready, a cutscene will play as the caravan sets out. Upon arrival in Zion, the expedition is immediately ambushed by hostile White Legs tribals. Despite your best efforts, the other caravan members are scripted to fall during this fight.

Focus on staying behind cover and defending yourself rather than attempting to save your allies. Crossing the rope bridge ahead triggers the next phase of your journey, introducing key local figures.

Transitioning to Main Zion Storylines

After defending yourself against the initial wave, follow the quest marker along the canyon floor. You will soon meet Follows-Chalk, a friendly tribal who helps guide you through the initial terrain.

Completing this opening sequence formally unlocks the broader regional quests in Zion Canyon. From here, you can freely explore the landscape, complete local tasks, and shape the outcome of the valley's native tribes.
